At least 13 people killed and ninety-eight wounded in train crash in the nation of Mexico.

A deadly train derailment in the southern state of Oaxaca has claimed the lives of at least 13 people, an incident expected to reignite opposition criticisms regarding the pace and execution of the country's key public works projects.

The disaster occurred on the Interoceanic Train, a route built to join the Atlantic and Pacific Ocean across the thinnest stretch of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This project was created to provide an competing rail corridor to the Panama Canal, intended to promote regional growth in the area.

“We are going to meticulously determine the cause of this tragedy,” affirmed the national leader.

The president confirmed that, of the some 250 passengers on board, another 98 were wounded, with five of those in critical condition. The official stated plans to travel to Oaxaca to meet those impacted.

Major Initiative of Previous Administration

The Interoceanic Train was a central infrastructure project of the previous administration, whose time in office ended the previous year. This project was a hallmark of his administration's economic vision for the southern region.

Another multi-billion dollar rail project from that time, a tourist and cargo loop around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also integral to the comprehensive effort to revitalize the economy of a relatively less developed part of the country.

Project Execution and Worries

The building of both railway systems was supervised by the armed forces, marking a dramatic expansion of its responsibilities in public works. They were built at an rapid rate, surpassing expectations to be at least partly inaugurated before the end of that presidency.

However, this fast-paced schedule had concurrently fueled significant questions over safety standards.

  • Sunday's derailment was the third such incident on the Interoceanic Train in the current year.
  • This includes an prior crash this month when a train struck a truck at a crossing.
  • The other major rail project has also seen a couple of non-fatal derailments.

Calls for Review and Suspension

In the aftermath of the catastrophe, the leader of a major opposition party called for an urgent pause in the building and running of all comparable projects.

This halt was suggested until the completion of a full independent investigation. The party declared that the tragedy "demands swift accountability."

In reaction, the national leader maintained that the train had been running in total adherence to all safety requirements. Assurances were given that the government would remain "responsible" in both the development and running of these vital undertakings.
