Roughly fifty vehicles have been covered with what seems to be blood from a person in the Germany's municipality of Hanau near Frankfurt, police confirm law enforcement.
Automobiles, walls and postal boxes were marked, occasionally with prohibited symbols, they announced in a release.
Officers report they were contacted during the night on Wednesday, when a resident noticed that a vehicle in the Lamboy area of Hanau had been covered with a red-colored fluid.
The liquid had been drawn in the shape of a swastika, they stated.
Officers then discovered many other smeared vehicles and building exteriors in the nearby vicinity.
Nazi symbols are prohibited in Germany under legislation banning the public exhibition of symbols from the Nazi era.
Law enforcement state preliminary tests suggest the substance was most likely human bodily fluid.
"Currently there is no clue as to its source; investigators are presently not informed of any harm in relation with the occurrence," they added.
Municipal representatives announced they were working "to unravel the mystery" and have requested to the residents for information.
A senior political figure stated the incident made him stunned and needed to be addressed quickly.
"This event strikes at the very heart of Hanau and revives the pain of the extremist attack five years ago," he posted on online, recalling the death of nine individuals by a shooter aiming at people of foreign heritage in February 2020.
