EU Could Respond to ‘Unwarranted’ US Travel Restrictions, Spokesperson States

The EU might “act quickly and firmly” in response to what it deems “unwarranted” visa bans imposed by the United States against five European individuals working on fighting digital hatred and disinformation, an EU official stated.

EU Officials Decry US Move as ‘Coercion’

European leaders such as Emmanuel Macron charged Washington of “coercion and intimidation”, after the travel bans targeted individuals that were at the heart of campaigns to introduce legislation regulating US-based technology firms.

“For too long, European activists have led organised efforts to coerce US companies to punish US perspectives they oppose,” wrote a senior US official online. “The current administration will no longer tolerate such actions of censorship beyond its borders.”

Broad Criticism Across Europe

Nations including Germany, Spain, and the UK, alongside numerous EU representatives joined France in condemning the decision.

The bans were imposed this week against an ex-European commissioner involved in crafting the bloc’s digital governance law, along with four anti-disinformation campaigners, from two in Germany and two in the UK.

An Escalating Conflict Over Regulation

This European legislation is viewed by US officials as a form of censorship, while EU authorities contend the regulations are necessary to control hate speech and disinformation.

This row risks becoming part of a much broader existing cultural and political conflict involving the current US administration and European institutions.

In related legal developments:

  • A federal judge has halted efforts to reduce federal homeland security funding to states which resist specific federal immigration rules. The judge ruled the case was “another example” of linking government assistance to policy compliance.
  • Approval was given for the dispatch of hundreds of national guard troops to New Orleans ahead of the holiday period, coinciding with an ongoing border security initiative.
  • A Pacific Island nation has agreed to take in a limited number of migrants from the US in exchange for increased assistance, after signing a memorandum of understanding with Washington.

Additionally, a congressional representative has initiated legal action seeking the stripping of the current president’s name from a well-known performing arts center in Washington DC.

Experts have also noted that recent statements regarding Venezuelan oil reflect a broader belief in some quarters of “economic expansionism”, drawing comparisons with historical international actions.
