The Former President's Woke Warning Overlooks Europe's Real Danger: Technological Stagnation.

Donald Trump's security policy document offers a misguided view of Europe. The document asserts that unrestrained immigration and so-called "woke" policies represent an existential risk to the continent's identity. However, this argument rests on a fundamental misinterpretation of the situation. The actual challenge facing Europe is not cultural but technological and economic backwardness.

A Glaring Growth Gap Between the US and Europe

The data paint a sobering picture. Between 2008 and 2023, US GDP grew by 87%, compared to a paltry 13.5% increase for the EU. During this time, EU GDP per capita fell from 76.5% to just half of the American figure. Strikingly, even the poorest US state now has a higher per capita income than major European economies like France and Italy.

Today, about 50% of the world’s top fifty tech companies are American, while a mere four are from Europe.

The Innovation Deficit: A Critical Question

This widening economic gap is driven by stronger productivity growth in the US, fueled by technological innovation and higher total factor productivity. The scene of world technology leadership is overwhelmingly American. Over the past fifty years, 241 US firms have grown into enterprises valued at over ten billion dollars, compared with just 14 in Europe.

This disparity raises a vital issue: In the race for tomorrow's sectors like semiconductors, AI, and fusion energy, where does the EU stand? Experts widely agree it is essentially a two-horse race involving the US and China, with European nations starting at a clear handicap.

Root Causes of Europe's Innovation Gap

Several major reasons explain this innovation chasm.

  • Venture Capital: The United States has a far deeper and agile system for funding startups. Europe has yet to establish a genuine capital markets union, which limits the growth potential of new firms.
  • Regulatory Fragmentation: Excessive and fragmented regulation hamper Europe. A American entrepreneur can introduce a service under a single set of laws to access a consumer base of over 330 million. The European Union, despite a larger population size, is split among 27 separate regimes, creating huge market obstacles.
  • Mindset Differences: Attitudes toward risk-taking vary greatly. In parts of Europe, business failure was once viewed with penalties, whereas in the United States, it is often seen as a badge of experience.
  • Defense Spending: The United States enjoys a deeply integrated academic-military-industrial complex. Europe's long-term lack of spending in military capabilities has weakened its ability in pioneering research.

A Path Forward: Grounds for Cautious Optimism

Despite these challenges, there are reasons for hope. Policymakers are growing more conscious of the existential challenge and have started to advance substantial change. Notable reports on EU competitiveness and the internal market highlight the necessity of sweeping changes.

With the right incentives and regulatory reforms, these assets might enable much higher levels of business-led breakthroughs.

The continent still possesses significant strengths: skilled human capital, excellent education systems, and world-class research institutions. Coupled with a large internal market and substantial household savings, these elements could trigger a new wave of venture creation.

Crucially, even if the EU does not take the lead in creating next-generation tech, it can still significantly boost productivity by adopting and adapting advancements from other regions.

A Critical Juncture

Europe now stands at a decisive crossroads. To paraphrase a famous line, economic erosion often happens "gradually and then suddenly". So far, Europe's slide in innovation has been steady. But, without decisive action to address its deep-seated problems, today's gradual weakening could turn into a rapid and permanent decline in world influence.
