The Black Phone

The director's claustrophobic thriller remains effective despite the lack of a sequel. Set in 1978 Denver, several kidnappings has left the youth on edge. When Finney is kidnapped by “the Grabber” and imprisoned in a cellar, he fears the worst. However, the disconnected phone on the wall continues to ring, with eerie communicators giving advice, as the intuitive nightmares of Gwen, his sister may be his salvation. A solid creepfest. The Tammy Faye Biopic

In the battle between faith and wealth, the winner is obvious for greed in this director's wonderfully garish biopic about the fallen TV preacher and her felon spouse. Garfield portrays the corrupt Bakker, who proclaims initially, “God does not want us to be poor,”. The couple set about monetising the American public's Christian beliefs. It's a spectacle of poor styling, bad makeup and insincerity, however Jessica Chastain manages to depict the character as a sympathetic figure. October 14th, late night, the Film4 channel
